NEW win for farmworkers + 3 actions for Black History Month

Did you hear about the seasonal farm workers in New York who united and won big time?

Keep reading to learn more, but first, an important update about what MWAC farm worker members have been up to.

It’s Black History Month! Have you seen the social media posts shared by our worker members?

“We’ve been feeding Canada for almost 60 years; isn’t it time we had equal rights?”

👉 February 11 is Canada’s Agriculture Day – tap here to see more photos of the first farmworkers to come to Canada. It also marks 2.5 years since MWAC farmworker members published an open letter exposing the unsafe and abusive conditions at two farms in Ontario. Watch the video below:

Migrant Caribbean workers united and won the first-ever union contract for farm workers in New York State! This is a huge victory. Some of the benefits they won in their contract: wage increase, 9 paid holidays, sick days, safety gear, and more!

Una vez más, el gobierno te ha fallado. En lugar de aumentar el número de plazas bajo los programas de nominación de NB, los ha reducido a la mitad. Muchos trabajador@s, como tú, que trabajaron arduamente para cumplir con los requisitos, no podrán aplicar porque han cambiado las reglas.

 Esto no es justo!

Los dos programas más utilizados por los trabajador@s sector de marisco también se han visto afectados.

  1. El Programa de l@s Trabajador@s de el Atlántico
  2. Programa de Trabajador@s con habilidades

Este año, el programa de Trabajador@s Calificados ha cambiado y ahora se divide en tres vías separadas.

  1. Vía de Experiencia Laboral
  2. Vía de Graduados
  3. Vía de Ocupaciones Prioritarias

Esto significa que miles de trabajador@s en estas industrias no podrán aplicar a través del programa de Trabajador@s con habilidades y el program del Atlántico por ahora.

Esto no es justo El gobierno está jugando con las vidas de miles de trabajador@s que han gastado dinero preparando documentos para este año.

Necesitamos alzar la voz y exigir el estatus de residente permanente para tod@s.

Otra victoria: Itzel obtuvo más de $2,000 en beneficios de Seguro de Empleo (EI) mientras estaba sin trabajo.

En 2023, mientras trabajaba con un permiso de trabajo cerrado en el sector pesquero de New Brunswick, Itzel enfrentó despidos inesperados debido a una escasez de langosta. Este es un problema común en el sector pesquero del Atlántico, dejando a cientos de trabajadores sin ingresos mientras tienen que poner comida en la mesa y pagar la renta.

Cuando a Itzel le negaron el seguro de desempleo, se negó a aceptarlo. Con el apoyo de nuestra organización, la Alianza de Trabajadores Migrantes por el Cambio, luchó por sus derechos y finalmente ganó más de $2,000 en beneficios de EI.

Another victory: Itzel won over $2,000 from Employment Insurance (EI) while she was laid off.

In 2023, while working on a closed work permit in New Brunswick’s fishery sector, Itzel faced unexpected layoffs due to a lobster shortage. This is a common issue in the Atlantic fishery sector, leaving hundreds of workers without income and having to put food on their tables and pay rent.

When Itzel was denied unemployment insurance, she refused to accept it. With the support of our organization, the Migrant Workers Alliance for Change, she fought for her rights and ultimately won over $2,000 in EI benefits.

Itzel’s victory shows that we can win when we stand united and fight for their rights.

 She encourages all workers to join the Migrant Workers Alliance for Change and fight for our rights!
