The federal government just changed up the rules for international students. Now, tens of thousands may not be able to get a work permit unless they get high language scores or get jobs deemed valuable by Canada. Changes come into effect on November 1, 2024. Send a letter before it’s too late. Call on PM Trudeau and Immigration Minister Miller to ensure fairness and grandfather in all students who have already committed to studying in Canada.

L@s polític@s de derecha están utilizando a l@s inmigrantes como chiv@s expiatori@s de la crisis de la vivienda y la asequibilidad, desviando la atención de la codicia corporativa y los fracasos de las políticas gubernamentales. Tod@s l@s trabajador@s, incluid@s l@s migrantes e inmigrantes, están sufriendo décadas de recortes en la atención médica, la vivienda, la educación y los servicios sociales. La élite quiere que estemos dividid@s (ciudadan@s contra recién llegad@s) para que no nos unamos contra l@s multimillonari@s, l@s renteros y l@s criminales climáticos que se benefician de nuestra crisis. We are migrant workers in Canada. The current migrant worker system, including employer-restricted work permits, employer-controlled housing, lack of permanent resident status, and insufficient labour protections, creates a breeding ground for our exploitation. The Open Work Permit for Vulnerable Workers, intended to offer some protection, has failed to provide adequate changes and support to migrant workers facing abuse.
While we fight for permanent status for all and regularization for all undocumented migrants, we urgently call on the federal government to implement the following changes to protect us and address the systemic inequities within the current regime:
Charles Mwangi is a bisexual man who fled to Canada in 2019 because he was at risk of persecution and being killed in Kenya. But his life is in grave danger once again as he faces deportation to danger and death in Kenya on August 25 – less than one week!
Charles is a long-standing resident of the Jane Finch community who has made significant contributions to our communities. He worked on the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic as a personal support worker, caring for elderly people. He now continues to do essential work at two shelters for both youth and adults as a housekeeper and personal support worker in downtown Toronto.
Join us on Wednesday, August 21 at 11am EST at MP Judy Sgro’s office (2201 Finch Ave W, North York) to demand a stop to his deportation and permanent residency status for him and all migrants!
This action is being coordinated by Jane Finch Action Against Poverty and Migrant Workers Alliance for Change.
